Sony to release an iPod Touch-like Walkman at CES 2009
December 13th, 2008 686 viewsLooks like Sony isn’t willing to completely concede defeat to Apple just yet. The above product shots looks to be a mock up (check the profile shot), but the new ‘Walkman’ will include an OLED WQVGA touchscreen and an interface that probably mimics the likes of the PSP and PS3. It also includes WiFi, allowing you to tap into an array of features not found on the iPod, such as the ability to navigate to an artist’s music video on YouTube directly from the MP3 or purchase music via Amazon.
In addition, the new Sony touchscreen Walkman will offer 16GB or 32GB of storage, an FM radio and a 400 x 240 resolution screen.
Now, all this is fine, but I can’t ehlp but feel that such a device is playing catch-up, and not just with the iPod Touch, either. The new Walkman sports many of the features that the latest mobile phones have had for months (incuding, ironically, Sony Ericsson Walkman phones!)
There will be built-in search capabilities that can be used to learn more about your favorite artist, and users will be able to purchase full CD’s of their favorite artists through the Walkman at Amazon. A powerful S-Master digital amplifier is built into this device as well as digital noise canceling to ensure optimal sound. On top of all of these impressive features, Sony has also included a FM radio to truly differentiate this product amongst the competition. Also, while the product shots above do not show hardware buttons for music control (previous track, play/pause, next track and volume), we believe this device will have dedicated hardware buttons for this functionality.
