GMail Launches PDF Viewer in Google Docs
December 14th, 2008 340 viewsGmail users who hate Adobe Acrobat Reader rejoice now! Google has changed the behavior of Gmail so that when you open a PDF, it will now open the reader built into Google Docs instead of firing up your native viewer. For many, this will result in a faster experience.

Here’s the announcement from Marc Miller from Software Engineer at Gmail Team: Clicking “View” quickly opens the PDF inside your browser, complete with the graphics and formatting you expect to see in a PDF.
There are two other benefits to this:
- The updated page view which lets you hop around the document a whole lot faster.
- The built-in zoom, which scales the text to fit your monitor with a higher degree of detail than the text resizer found in your browser.
If you want, you can still view in plain HTML from a link at the top of the new viewer. And if you want to download, save, and view your PDFs later while offline using client software, you can still do that by hitting the “Download” link.
Features include zoom in, zoom out, next/previous pages. The only thing they need is page rotation and what we have here is a complete Adobe Reader replacement.
